Pulp-Fed Beef from Pontious Ranches

A special limited edition product to celebrate Radius’s 1 year anniversary
Pulp-Fed Beef from Pontious Ranches

To celebrate Radius’s 1 year anniversary, we are very excited to offer a special limited edition product to our customers — pulp-fed beef from Pontious Ranches in Dripping Springs, TX. In addition to grazing grass, Pontious cattle are given organic fruit and vegetable pulp from nearby Alchemy Organics. The result is richer nutrient density and deep flavor.

A limited supply of Pontious Ranches beef will be available at Radius starting the week of March 23rd. The specific date will be announced closer to that time.

Nate Pontious of Pontious Ranches with Kevin from Radius

Pontious Ranches embodies the philosophy we believe in at Radius — soil health is the foundation for good farming. Nate and Remi practice mixed-species regenerative farming, support a local circular food system, prioritize nutrient density, and coax flavor from those nutrients.

Multiple species (pigs, chickens, sheep, cattle) bring diversity to their pastures. Cattle graze an area first to eat the taller grasses and leave behind lower growth and forbs. Then sheep follow to graze closer to the ground and consume plants cattle avoid, improving pasture utilization while disrupting species-specific parasite cycles. Pigs are used in concentrated areas to till and aerate the soil. And chickens are moved twice daily across all the pastures to bring yet another dimension of diversity.

The results are incredible. On the left side of the fence is a neighbor’s land where only cattle have grazed. On the right side of the fence is Pontious land that has had cattle, sheep, pigs, and chicken on it. One side is overrun by homogeneity, the other has layers of diversity.

Nate and Remi supplement their cattle’s grass diet with organic fruit and vegetable pulp. Nate’s inspiration was from raising pigs, nature’s original trash compactor. The pulp from Alchemy Organics would have been a waste product, and now it’s nutrients for the animals. As a result, Pontious beef is lower in fat and higher in vitamins and minerals than the baseline USDA grass-fed beef. This is the beauty of a local food ecosystem. The nutrient density lab reports are published on their website

We look across 5 factors when sourcing any product for Radius — breed, diet, lifestyle, age, and processing — to assess quality standards. Pontious is high integrity across the board.

  • Breed: Akaushi
  • Diet: Grazed grass and organic produce pulp
  • Lifestyle: Rotated on pasture at least once per week, raised in a multi-species system
  • Harvest Age: ~20 months
  • Processing: Processed at a facility that uses Temple Grandin practices to reduce stress on the animal
